Our task was to enhance the user experience by creating an exterior signage system for the campus. Our goal was to develop a minimal, future-proof signage system that could subtly infuse moments of our client’s fun and playful brand personality. The result is a comprehensive wayfinding system complete with campus directionals, vehicle directionals, and destination IDs, which offer high-level, mid-level, and detailed touch points to help users navigate the campus. Architecturally, each building in this campus utilizes one of the brand’s colors as a primary driver for the architecture, interior design, and graphics. To minimize material waste, we adapted and reused the existing structure of a monument sign from the campus's previous tenant. A historic building with a long history, Chelsea Market has a notable mix of complex and hard-to-navigate floor plates full of architectural irregularities. Our challenge was to build an environmental graphics system that could make use of the unique space by creating interactive graphic moments for users and supplementing our wayfinding signage system to bring clarity to a series of convoluted floor plates. The result is an eclectic system that blends EGD, interior design, and immersive experiential design. It complements the architectural theme in the space, Homes, by exploring and celebrating individual tastes in home decoration and the visual languages that make a house feel like home. NYC in NeonWe created two installations designed to capture people’s imagination and ignite their sense of curiosity. Embracing the architectural theme of the home, we crafted custom-framed gallery walls showcasing iconic NYC buildings and subway scenes. Select frames invite visitors to open them, revealing illuminated neon views of iconic pop culture moments related to the images inside. These areas incorporate shelves, curated found objects, painted rugs, and other specialty installations to create unique "home-scapes." To seamlessly integrate with the architectural finishes, our signage featured stainless steel, white, and black finishes, depending on the location of each sign. The wayfinding signage guides users throughout the space, directing them to various meeting rooms, offices, and other destinations. We divided the area into sections labeled by cardinal directions, using simple directional signs supported by room signage and Destination IDs. Our goal was to create a functional signage system that enhances legibility for workers navigating this complex space. By utilizing bold colors and large, clear typography, we were able to breathe new life into an often-neglected back-end area. Color-coded exteriors and bay labels simplify the drivers' experience. Instead of searching for a complicated street address in a busy area, they can easily locate the “Red” or “Blue” docks and the specific bay they need. Once inside and unloaded, large, legible, color-coded signage identifies elevator numbers, maximum loads, and other dock rules. Who cares? Throughout the month-long installation process, we captured the attention of the dock workers, many of whom had been there for years. As we completed the installation of the new signage, workers approached us excitedly, sharing how much easier their routines had become. Our method of color-coding the docks was integrated into the back-end system, providing clarity for delivery drivers, dock employees, and company logistics, transforming a once convoluted working experience into a more efficient one. Our main challenge in designing for this campus was creating a framework that allowed for subtle commonalities across the campus while also showcasing each building's distinct architectural style. Architecturally, this building is inspired by the Art Deco era. Our graphics complement this style through the use of metallic materials, intricate patterns, and elegant lines, celebrating all things San Jose—from buildings and businesses to nature and more. In lounge areas, simple and abstract linework graphics add a subtle ambiance. In quieter, more subdued spaces, custom-designed wallpaper features layered patterns and imagery that highlights the local flora, fauna, and hiking trails. Each library has its own distinctive architectural style, separate from the building's overall theme. It was known for its exuberant style and iconic flashing lights. The graphic highlights old and new, blending an image of the building when it was first built, and another shot of it in modern day. The glass graphics in each quadrant were designed to maintain a cohesive feel across the campus while also reflecting each building's unique identity. In this instance, the design of the glass graphics highlights the root systems and flowers native to San Jose. Divided into four sections, the space highlights Chrome technology applications across four industries: Education, Technology, Retail, and Healthcare. The area’s architecture draws inspiration from the space motifs in the ChromeOS brand, using dark grays and bright whites to evoke the feeling of a space station. Our graphics system complements this theme with refined pops of color unique to each vignette. Specialty graphics and found-object installations add texture and context to each section, creating a cohesive experience throughout the space. Our goal was to create a playful and immersive experience that celebrates the whimsy and wonder of the ocean and its inhabitants. Through bold, vibrant colors, diverse macro and micro textures, and spatial themes like scarcity and density, this design invites viewers to explore the depths of the sea in exciting new ways. By experimenting with light and materials, we brought unique vibrancy and personality to each area. For wayfinding and placemaking, the floorplate was divided into four quadrants, each inspired by distinct oceanic elements: Coral, Water, Kelp, and Seagrass. The graphics and signage systems reinforce these themes through color, form, and content. Architecturally, this floor is inspired by rich organic elements, gardens, and nature. In this spacious lounge area, my work includes a full-coverage floor graphic and a feature wall graphic that wraps around all four walls of the central area. The wall graphic exclusively features plants and flowers native to New York City and its surrounding areas. Each plant was carefully researched and curated based on its form, color, and geographic origin, then deconstructed to create an elegant, large-scale kaleidoscopic effect. Our main challenge in designing for this campus was creating a framework that allowed for subtle commonalities across the campus while also showcasing each building's distinct architectural style. The 255 Building, known as the Coastal Modern building, draws its visual language from a blend of the area’s stunning natural scenery, California coastal and modern architecture, and the Sea Ranch school. The content stories highlight local San Jose landmarks, scenic hiking trails, and tidal patterns. Adopting a “Branded House” approach, each of the five stations features a consistent logotype style. The unique typeface used in the café adds personality to each station. The glass graphics in each quadrant were designed to maintain a cohesive feel across the campus while also reflecting each building's unique identity. In this instance, the design of the glass graphics highlights the root systems and flowers native to San Jose.
